Can you make that but different?!

More than likely! All our leather goods are handmade from scratch, and so completely customisable. We can easily produce a quote for custom leather carvings, on any of our hand made products. Simply contact us with your ideas and we’ll do the rest! These products are made from scratch, so are able to resize and reposition parts as you wish. We can also and add names or custom carving to just about any part of the item.

We work with a range of leather for different purposes, fixings and fastenings, leather lace and tough, waxed threads. Solid brass fittings are used wherever possible as they don’t rust and damage the leather!

Do you custom make other leather items?

Probably! Ask and find out!

There’s something incredibly satisfying in producing a “brand new” custom item. In fact it’s so satisfying I blogged about it! So we’re always excited to consider a new commission!

The leather case above was custom made for a Spark Amp, and has a handy pocket at the front for the mains lead. I was really pleased with the contrasting red stitching.

We designed these hand carved leather vases for an interior design company asking “Can you make?” They ended up in a small chain of restaurants. We currently use one as a waste paper basket in the office.

The sheath was a quick “Can you…?” made for a customer at a festival.

Bottom right: archery braces were another “Can you make…?” See the making of this piece here!

How long does custom leather take?

For the sake of my sanity I will only take on one custom build a month – maximum!  (Not counting standard shop items ordered!)

Your quote and our discussion should give you more of an idea. But if it’s a “stock” item such as a leather bag or belt, you should have it within two weeks.  Obviously if it is a custom designed item I need to design and make from scratch, it will take longer.

Don’t worry – I will stay in touch with you regarding progress each step of the way!

How much does custom leather cost?

There are a lot of factors affecting the cost of leather goods. Obviously a satchel using a lot of leather will be more costly than a small leather pouch. Additional materials such as leather lace, complex stitching, dyes or copper rivets can also be costly (see photo).

The final factor to consider is time. If I’m customising one of my standard products I will have a fairly good idea of time, if I’m figuring out how to make an item for the first time then obviously there will be additional time implications.

After discussing your requirements I will produce a quote which will include:

  • the cost of the basic item
  • total price of any dyes and fixings
  • estimate of the time for any custom carving or extras
  • any extras (should you choose, for example, Spanish edge lacing instead of a basic whip stitch).

When the item is complete the final invoice will reflect the actual number hours, should it take me less time than I estimate.

Do you do bulk discounts for custom leather?

Although we make very little profit on our leather goods, if you’re buying in bulk it lessens the sting! So occasionally we can be persuaded! But otherwise, as they say, “Please don’t ask as refusal often causes offense!”

We were commissioned to make some leather notebook covers for Quaker Oats. Although I’m not sure there was a discount it would have been a fair price! It was a long time ago! Just figured it was good bragging rights and a bulk order! We did, however, negotiate a discount for a bulk order of custom leather belts for outfitting a wedding.

How do I pay?

In two parts:

On accepting the quote I will produce an invoice and request 50% before starting work. When conpleted, the product, just like with any other goods ordered, we’ll ask for the balance before delivery.  We prefer cash or crypto! But bank transfer is fine if you must!

The Ravn Leather Price Promise!

Please note: the final invoice will always be reviewed in light of actual hours taken. This means that you will never be overcharged in case of non-standard patterns. If I underestimate my time, that’s my fault! We promise the price quoted is always the maximum price we will charge. No hidden extras or “It ran over so…” I’m a fool to myself, maybe, but I can’t in good conscience suddenly charge a customer extra!

Of course, if you change the goalposts after the quote, we will re-quote! We’ve lost out before and Beastie needs to eat!
